Lez Zeppelin
Lez Zeppelin! Woo hoo! The all female Led Zeppelin Tribute band. I saw them tonight at the Mercury Lounge and they were so cool. The sound was right on, and their drummer is a powerhouse. There were a couple sloppy parts here and there, but hell, remember Led Zeppelin at Live Aid? Yeah. Lez Zeppelin kicks ass.
They opened with Good Times Bad Times, and then proceeded to burn through the early Zeppelin catalogue. Misty Mountain Hop was a big highlight. They nailed that one. Also, How Many More Times, What is and What Should Never Be, Rock and Roll, Immigrant Song, Heartbreaker, The Ocean, Your Time is Going to Come, Babe, I'm Going to Leave You and Black Dog. Amazing.
The guitarist even brought out the bow for a couple of numbers and had a Theremin on hand for Whole Lotta Love. At one point in the show she brought out the double neck guitar and announced to the crowd, "You know there are only two songs it might be." Mercifully, it was the second: Song Remains the Same, and Stairway to Heaven went unplayed.
I am not a fan of tribute bands at all, but there is something quite satisfying about seeing Led Zeppelin performed this way. Maybe it was just the honest and earnest interpretation of the music, or maybe the "ok, you have my attention" factor backed up with superb musicanship. I am not sure. But one thing is for sure, it was such a cool show that I put myself on the mailing list and I am going to start thinking of people that I am going to make come with me next time. That Roberta Plant is a hottie.

Friend of Dogs
On Monday while talking with Jay out on Bleeker Street, a tan-spuds-mckenzie looking dog crossed over the sidewalk towards me pulling her owner along with her. The owner was talking on a cell phone, but the dog clearly wanted some petting because she made a beeline for me and then butted my leg with her head. She stood there looking down with her head pressed firmly into my leg until I bent down to pet her. She was content to hang out with me that way for about five minutes even as her owner tugged on the leash to try and gether to move on.
It was just a small incident, but it was amusing. It's always nice to be sought out.

Gotham Girls Roller Derby
I've been all over the place recently and have not been doing a very good job of updating the old blog. I have been keeping busy though, and one of the best decisions I have made recently was to go to the Roller Derby up in the South Bronx. The match was between the Manhattan Mayhem and the Queens of Pain. I have to say, I don't know if it's the cool black uniforms or the dominatrix personas, but I really love the Queens of Pain. And I know I have a huge crush on Suzy HotRod and Rolletta Lynn. I'm just a fan boy at heart, I guess.
I tried to take some photos, but none of them came out very well. At best there are three that are ok. Here's one.

So, I will definitely go again next month. And I'm going to try to work on my action photography - maybe actually read the instructions for my camera - and see if I can't up the quality of my low-light-fast-motion photos. Perhaps Rolletta will even notice me on the sidelines and make me her pet. Or something.

Ugh.
In two days I got over 300 spam comments. I'm turning comments off for a bit to give myself a rest. Please use other modes of communication.
Futureheads
I went out to see the Futureheads last night at Webster Hall. Actually, I dragged myself to see them because I really didn't feel much like going and then pretty much everything went wrong along the way.
I got there late - primarily to avoid the opening bands that I really had no interest in seeing. Then when I got to the door I couldn't find my ticket. After searching through my bag for five minutes I decided I must have left it back at my apartment so I went all the way back to Brooklyn to search for it there. Of course, it wasn't so I returned to searching my bag which is where I found it. So I went all the way back to Manhattan and that's when it started to rain.
I arrived in time to see the whole set - and it was good - but my mood had already deteriorated beyond repair. While sulking in the back by the bar I vowed never to see another band at Webster Hall. Something has to take the blame.
